Ecumenism and Interfaith Affairs Catholic Pastoral Centre 100th Anniversary of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in 2008 General Overview The Office of Ecumenism and Interfaith Affairs exists to promote the goals of the Roman Catholic Church in its pursuit of Christian unity and interfaith understanding and cooperation within the Archdiocese through prayer, dialogue and teaching and to represent the Archdiocese in ecumenical and interfaith events. Services The Ecumenical Committee and Interfaith Committee exists to assist the Office of Ecumenism and Interfaith Affairs in its mandate. Composed of Catholic lay people and clergy, members serve as resource persons in studying various issues and in planning Roman Catholic participation in ecumenical and interfaith events. Dialogue takes place by representation of the Archdiocese through the Director of the office in various organizations, for example the Ontario Catholic Conference for Ecumenism, the Christian-Jewish Dialogue of Toronto, the Canadian Churches Forum for Global Ministries as well as informal contacts with ecumenical officers and representatives of other churches and religious traditions. Teaching is done primarily through lectures which the director of the office is invited to give as well as through writing on topics of ecumenical and interfaith interest. This service is also accomplished through the promotion of lecturers who speak on such topics which promote the goals of the office within the Archdiocese. Prayer for Christian unity and for interfaith cooperation is promoted in a formal way through the promotion of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity as well as occasions for interfaith prayer, for example the Interfaith Prayers Service for Peace and informally by the encouragement of our people to pray on a regular basis for the unity Christ wills for his church and for greater understanding among various faiths one for another.
