Vincent Nguyen was born the sixth of nine children near Saigon, Viet Nam in 1966. His great-great-grandfather was a Vietnamese Martyr. When Vincent was 17, he escaped the Communist country on a fishing boat and ended up in Japan. In 1984, he moved to Toronto where he attended high school and completed an electrical engineering degree at the University of Toronto. In 1998, Father Nguyen was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Toronto and continued his studies at the Pontifical Canadian College in Rome, where he was awarded a Licentiate in Canon Law (2008). He served in a number of Toronto parishes. In September 2009, Father Nguyen was named Chancellor of Spiritual Affairs, Moderator of the Curia, and Vicar for Deacons. In November, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Toronto. On January 13, 2010, Nguyen became Canada’s first Roman Catholic bishop of Asian descent, and also the youngest bishop at time of ordination. He serves as Bishop of the Eastern region of Toronto, including the parishes of Scarborough and the Durham Region. |
