Sacramental Records Search

The Archives staff will conduct searches if you are looking for a record of a sacrament (baptism, marriage, etc.) that occurred after 1910, but please note that we will only do so for the purposes of fulfilling legal requirements (ecclesiastical or civil). Due to Ontario privacy legislation and our internal policy, sacramental records after 1910 are closed to public access.

  • Information about a sacramental record will only be released to the person whose name appears in the record, unless the individual is under 18 OR it can be proven that the individual is deceased OR there has been prior authorization for the release of this information.
  • The Archives does not maintain a database of sacramental records. You must be able to give us the name of the parish where the event occurred or an indication of the area where the family was living at the time the sacrament took place. Please contact us by phone or email for a list of other questions we can ask to help narrow down the search.
  • If you are seeking sacramental records to provide documents for a government form, we will only conduct the search if the Government office has told you that your church records will be acceptable. Otherwise, please see the contact information below.
  • Please note that the official record of a marriage is the Government of Ontario record, which is held by the Office of the Registrar General.
  • Past sacramental record keeping traditions in the Archdiocese of Toronto have not always been consistent, often leading to absences in formal first communion, confirmation and death registers.
  • For family history searches prior to 1910 please see the Genealogy page.
