HOLY FATHER APPOINTS BISHOP DANIEL J. BOHAN
AS ARCHBISHOP OF REGINA
TORONTO (30 March 2005) - The Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, has appointed Bishop Daniel J. Bohan as Archbishop of Regina. The date and time of his installation will be announced soon. Bishop Bohan has served since 2003 as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Toronto. He has had responsibility for the care of the clergy and people of the Northern Region of the Archdiocese. Within the Archdiocese he has also been Vicar for Religious, and a Member of the Boards of Martyr’s Shrine and the Pastoral Mission Fund.
Aloysius Cardinal Ambrozic, Archbishop of Toronto, has expressed his thanks and his warmest good wishes to Archbishop-elect Bohan.
“He has not been with us very long, but we have grown quickly to like and appreciate him. His parting will be, inevitably, bittersweet. Bishop Daniel Bohan has been named Archbishop of Regina. We congratulate him and promise to pray for him.”
Archbishop-elect Bohan was born November 8, 1941 at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, son of Joseph Bohan and Rita (Mann). He grew up and was educated in Moncton, New Brunswick. He holds a BA from St. Thomas University, Chatham, NB; a BTh from Holy Heart Seminary in Halifax; an STB from the University of Laval, Québec; and an MA in Theology from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., USA.
At the national level, Archbishop-elect Bohan is a member of the Social Affairs Commission of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Before coming to Toronto, Archbishop-elect Bohan gave long and fruitful service in the Archdiocese of Moncton, New Brunswick. He was ordained to the Priesthood on May 13, 1967 in Moncton by Most Rev. Norbert Robichaud. Active in ecumenism, he was also the Roman Catholic representative on the Gospel, Ecumenism and Theology Committee of the Maritime Conference of the United Church of Canada from 1999 to 2003. He has also served on the Board of the Atlantic School of Theology, and himself taught Moral Theology at Holy Heart Seminary in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from 1968 to 1969.
Archbishop-elect Bohan has worked closely with clergy and lay people in pastoral ministry. He was Pastor of St. Bernard’s and Holy Family Parishes in Moncton from 2001 to 2003. He was Priest Moderator of the Pastoral Unit of Immaculate Heart, St. Jude, and Holy Ghost Parishes from 2000 to 2001. He was also appointed Episcopal Vicar for the English-speaking population of the Archdiocese of Moncton in 2000. He served as Pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Riverview, N.B., from 1986-2000. He was Pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish, Rexton, and St. Peter's, South Branch from 1984 to 1986. From 1977 to 1984, he was Pastor of St. Clement's Parish, Port Elgin, and St. Bartholomew's Melrose. At the beginning of his ordained ministry, from 1967 to 1977, he served as Curate at St. Augustine's Church, Moncton.
