Canonization of Fr. Damien,
patron of leprosy, October 11, 2009
World Leprosy Day is a time to raise awareness for leprosy and the people suffering with this disease. This time of education and prayer also honours Father Damien – the Belgian Catholic priest who lived and died in a leprosy colony. He eventually contracted the disease himself and experienced the physical degeneration and the social isolation caused by leprosy and spent his life trying to educate others in the spirit of acceptance.
Father Damien is to be raised to sainthood in Rome on October 11th. We remember his compassion and continue his work on January 31, 2010 during World Leprosy Day.
The World Leprosy Fund Canada continues to minister to those with leprosy around the world. Visit them online at www.leprosy.ca for more information. |
