A Project Hope family from a small mountain village in Iraq lived a peaceful and simple life. They were forced to flee their home suddenly when ISIS stormed their town with machetes, starting fires and killing people. Women were kidnapped and men were beaten. The family escaped to Turkey but cannot stay. They look forward to coming to Canada where they will reunite with members of their extended family and will be able to freely practice their beliefs.

Get involved today. Give hope today.

Would you like to get involved in sponsoring a refugee family? We are asking our 225 Catholic churches in the Archdiocese of Toronto to establish or re-establish refugee sponsorship committees. These volunteers are critical in a successful settlement for families.

Sponsors work in tandem with Office for Refugees of the Archdiocese of Toronto (ORAT), both during the application process and throughout the resettlement period.

Once families arrive, volunteer committees offer a full year of support—from the welcome at the airport until the end of the sponsorship period. In addition to offering fellowship and friendship,  volunteers help refugees:

  • Secure housing
  • Enrol in language classes
  • Search for employment
  • Find a doctor/dentist
  • Learn more about the local area

Other faith groups are welcome to inquire regarding resources to start their own sponsorship committees.
