Outreach in Justice and Love
Rev. Santo Arrigo, C.Ss.R.
Catholic Social Teaching is the basis of all social justice activity. The Church teaches that all are called to work together for the common good, provide for the most vulnerable, and strive for justice for all people. This includes the preferential option for the poor, the dignity of work, the principle of subsidiarity, and all people’s fundamental right to life and access to the necessities of life.
How do we walk the talk of social justice? Are there concrete ways to bring about positive change that will begin to address the inequities of our world today? St. Patrick’s Parish, Toronto, has seriously taken up the call to be “…the presence of Christ to the poor and marginalized, both personally and together as church.” (IV.3 of the Archdiocese of Toronto Pastoral Plan). By supporting partnership programs abroad and at the local level, this dynamic downtown Toronto parish can provide us with a glimpse of the potential for good that social justice brings to the table.
In this track, participants will hear about the joys and challenges of a parish in action and formulate their own strategies for embarking on the path of social justice. Each journey begins with a first step. Discover the next step for you and your parish in working to bring about the reign of God.
Fr. Santo Arrigo was born and raised in Toronto and ordained a Redemptorist Priest in 2001. Fr. Santo served as Pastor at St. Patrick’s Parish, Toronto for 8 years, where he has been involved in Social Justice initiatives, Director of Out of the Cold, Young Adult Ministry and the Redemptorist High School Retreat Ministry Team focusing on teaching youth about the call to justice and service. Previously, Fr. Santo served 9 years in youth and vocation ministry with the Redemptorists, and has worked as a Youth Worker in a crisis centre in Houston, TX, and has been a board member of different shelter initiatives across Canada. Currently, Fr. Santo is a member of the Canadian Adjunct Faculty for the Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies Program with the Centre for Ministry Development, and a member of the Commission for Redemptorist Youth and Vocation Ministry in Rome.
