Cardinal Leo Appointed as Member of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization

Posted : Jun-30-2026

On June 30, 2026, the Holy See announced that Pope Leo XIV has appointed Frank Cardinal Leo, Metropolitan Archbishop of Toronto, as a member of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization, in the Section for First Evangelization and New Particular Churches.

The work of the Dicastery is described on its website as follows:

“The Dicastery serves the work of evangelization, so that Christ, the light of the nations, may be known and witnessed to by word and deed, and the Church, his mystical Body, may be built up. The Dicastery is competent for fundamental questions regarding evangelization in the world and for the establishment, assistance and support of new particular Churches, without prejudice to the competence of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches.

The Dicastery is composed of two Sections: the Section for Fundamental Questions regarding Evangelization in the World and the Section for the First Evangelization and New Particular Churches within the territories of its competence.”

This appointment does not affect Cardinal Leo’s primary responsibility as Metropolitan Archbishop of Toronto. At present, His Eminence serves as a member of the following Dicasteries:

  • Member of the Dicastery for Legislative Texts (Appointment - January 2025)
  • Member of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue (Appointment - July 2025)
  • Member of the Dicastery for Clergy (Appointment - August 2025)
  • Member of the Dicastery for Evangelization (Appointment - June 2026)

As Cardinal Leo takes on additional responsibilities with this appointment, we continue to pray for his ministry and leadership as shepherd of the faithful in the Archdiocese of Toronto.
