Chrism Mass: Preparing for the Sacramental Year

Posted : Apr-01-2026

In the Archdiocese of Toronto, His Eminence Frank Cardinal Leo gathers with the priests and faithful during Tuesday of Holy Week to celebrate the Chrism Mass.

During this solemn liturgy, the Oil of the Sick and the Oil of Catechumens are blessed, and the Sacred Chrism is consecrated.

These holy oils are used in the Church’s sacramental life: the Oil of Catechumens in Baptism, the Oil of the Sick in the Anointing of the Sick, and the Sacred Chrism in Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Orders, as well as in the dedication of churches and altars.

Following the celebration, the oils are distributed to the parishes of the archdiocese for use throughout the coming year.

The Chrism Mass also provides an opportunity for priests of the archdiocese to renew their priestly promises and gather in solidarity with their bishop. At this year’s celebration, there were upwards of 350 priests in attendance – alongside 37 permanent deacons and 31 seminarians. Of special note, this year’s Mass recognized 26 Jubilarian priests celebrating 25, 50, 60 and 75 years since their ordination to the priesthood.

We pray for the priests of our archdiocese, giving thanks for their continued faithful ministry. We also pray for all those who will receive Holy Oils over the next year – may the gift of faith and the blessing of these Holy Oils bring them closer to our Lord.
