Men Ignatian Retreat: Soul-Making by Grace: Encountering God's Love through Meditations on Purgatory. In recent decades, purgatory has come to occupy a more marginal place within Catholic spirituality — viewed by some primarily as a place of suffering, by others as a source of superstition, and largely ignored by many. In his recent book, Soul-Making by Grace, Fr. Matthew Hendzel argues for the continuing relevance of purgatory within the life of faith. Challenging the idea that purgatory is concerned solely with the notion of divine satisfaction and painful self-reformation, he proposes a broader vision of how God’s grace may be at work during this time—one that includes not only purification, but also spiritual growth and even healing.

Drawing on the themes of this book, Fr. Matthew’s retreat will invite participants to explore how these “purgatorial” dynamics may already be present in their own lives. Through a series of talks, periods of prayer, and guided reflection, participants will be encouraged to consider how God might be using the ordinary—and sometimes difficult—experiences of life as invitations to a deeper awareness of divine love, and to a more generous response to that love.

This SILENT retreat begins on Friday evening and runs to Sunday with lunch. The suggested offering is $280 per person which includes two nights' accommodation, meals, spiritual direction and retreat program. Facilitated by: Fr. Matthew Hendzel, SJ
