St. Augustine's Seminary of Toronto, which has been in existence since 1913, was incorporated in 1983 by an Act of the Provincial Legislature of Ontario to which royal assent was given on June 21 of that year. By virtue of this Act, St. Augustine's Seminary has the power to grant its own degrees in theology, including honorary degrees. St. Augustine's Seminary is the Major Seminary of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto. It also welcomes candidates from elsewhere. Its primary purpose is the preparation of candidates for ordained priesthood in the Catholic Church.

St. Augustine’s Seminary is also mandated to form men and women aspiring to other ministries in the Church through our Institute of Theology. The purpose of the Institute and its Programs is to assist in the formation of the laity by offering a variety of courses to accommodate parish, school, and community involvement. The Institute of Theology coordinates two Conjoint Degrees and two Conjoint Certificates with the University of Toronto at the Master’s level and two Non-Conjoint Diploma programs in theology and lay ministry.

Although St. Augustine’s Seminary is an autonomous academic institution that offers academic programs and grants degrees on its own authority, it furthers the reach of its mission through affiliation with the Toronto School of Theology and the University of Toronto.                                                               Building
