In this three-part series, Regev Ben-David, Fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute’s Beit Midrash for Israeli Rabbis, will explore the ideas of three highly influential Zionist thinkers of the early 20th century: Herzl, Ahad Ha’am, and Rav Kook. Join these sessions to understand the complexity of Jewish identity in modern world day. This is an essential mini course for those interested in dialogue with Judaism.

  • The first session will focus on Herzl who is often considered the founding father of modern Zionism and will outline his life and philosophy.

Ahad Ha’am & Cultural-Secular Judaism

  • The second session will examine Ahad Ha’am’s dual argument for the legitimacy of non-religious Jewish identity with an emphasis on a cultural, and interpretational approach to tradition.

Rav Kook & The Religious-Zionist Aspiration

  • The third session will explore Rav Kook’s dialectical view of the evolution of religious observance with a view of redemption.
