On Nov. 9, the parishioners of St. Helen’s Parish braved the season’s first snowfall to attend a solemn Mass of Thanksgiving celebrating 150 years of faith. The bilingual Eucharistic celebration, in English and Portuguese, was presided by His Eminence Frank Cardinal Leo who was warmly welcomed by the congregation on his first visit to the parish.
The celebration coincided with the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica and parishioners were reminded they are “the living stones of the Lord’s temple.” In his homily, Cardinal Leo encouraged the faithful to keep the flame of faith, ignited at baptism, alive in their hearts. He urged them to pay special attention to young people, the elderly, the sick, the needy and to ensure no one is left behind. Cardinal Leo urged the community to attend Sunday Mass, affirming that “God waits for us.” He also invited parishioners to deepen their relationship with the Blessed Virgin Mary, speaking to her daily as a loving Mother. He asked the faithful to pray for vocations and underscored the vital role of unity, mutual respect, and forgiveness in fostering a vibrant parish community. He concluded with a stirring statement: “Remember the past with gratitude, live the present with enthusiasm, look to the future with confidence.”
Following the Mass, Cardinal Leo blessed a monument commemorating the parish’s historical milestones from 1875 to 2025. The celebration continued in the parish hall, where parishioners enjoyed a reception and had the opportunity to greet His Eminence.
