Holy Redeemer Parish in Pickering joyfully welcomed His Eminence Frank Cardinal Leo on April 26 as part of the parish’s 60th anniversary celebrations. Cardinal Leo celebrated Mass with the faithful, bringing together clergy, parishioners, and distinguished guests including Juanita Nathan, Member of Parliament for Pickering–Brooklin, Pickering Mayor Kevin Ashe and Gerard Winn, Director of Education for the Durham Catholic District School Board. Following the liturgy, the community gathered in the parish hall for a reception marked by fellowship and gratitude.
A highlight of the visit was the blessing of the newly installed statue of the Holy Redeemer, created by renowned Canadian sculptor Timothy Schmalz. The statue stands as a lasting legacy of the parish’s anniversary year, inviting all who encounter it to reflect more deeply on Christ’s presence and mission, while honouring the rich history of the parish community.
In his homily, Cardinal Leo reflected on Christ the Good Shepherd, and the importance of listening to God and His call for vocations. He encouraged families to attend Mass every Sunday as that is where they are strengthened in a very special way by participating in the love of God who come to us and offers himself for our salvation, so that we may share in the eternal banquet.
Jesus Christ came so that we may have life, and have it abundantly as the Gospel text concluded (John 10:10). He inspired parishioners to look ahead with hope to the next 60 years, noting that while faces and generations may change, the sacraments remain a constant source of grace at the heart of parish life. He called the community, especially its young people, to continue keeping the flame of faith alive, carrying forward the mission of Holy Redeemer with renewed faith, unity, and joy.
