Archaeological Investigation

The Regulations of the Ontario Cemeteries Act (Revised) provides for the use of archaeological techniques during the disinterment of human remains. The controlled excavation of a cemetery allows for the respectful documentation of known burials as well as the discovery of any additional graves that are not marked above ground. Scientific or forensic analysis of the skeletal remains is also provided for in the Cemeteries Act. Consent for the archaeological investigation was secured from the Archdiocese of Toronto. Archaeological Services Inc., directed by Ron Williamson (President and Chief Archaeologist), was contracted to carry out the relocation of the cemetery as well as the excavation and examination of the Elmbank Cemetery site.
